When I was in Jakarta in September, 2005 the weather was hot..and daytime activities was limited. Even for people who lived in the tropics, we loved the aircond..or ac as people in Jakarta called it. I was there to attend a shipping conference held at the Borobudur Hotel, very classy hotel, popular with the government people there and cost a bomb...USD 100 per night, the rate was a bit high for Indonesia. The hotel was however conveniently located, walking distance to Pasar Baroe and Pasar Senen. For Pasar Baroe, should go in the evening..cooler and less stressful to do shopping and more enjoyable to bargain. At Pasar Baroe you can buy textiles...a lot of Indian textiles shop and leather shoes, this shop only sold handmade shoes for men and ladies and no pair is the same! There were a few golf shops as well...in fact the first shops at the entrance were two golf shops left and right.
One of my friend from Johor did a fast one there, I mean he ordered a suit here and it was ready in 3 days and cost about RM 300 for the blazer and pant and nice workmanship. I went to Pasar Senen and have a quick round as it was hot at the complex but not so many people, finally bought some kain pelikat. However, the Atrium Shopping Mall was nice to hang around..it was next door to Pasar Senen. The top floor were full of shops selling auto-accessories...in a shopping complex!
I was lucky to have some friends who lived in Jakarta to take me around in the evening. A lady friend took me in her car to Kelapa Gading Mall and we have seafood at the open foodstall there ! Later we went to Hard Rock Cafe and enjoyed a very good music at Jaya Pub, one of the best known in Jakarta...I would not say the best because I have not been to others. There were four of us.
On the off day when there was no meeting, my other friend (Mr. Berthy) friend took me to Ancol, as his wife work at the premise, there was a free pass for us! Very nice place..near the sea, a lot of yatch and beautiful bungalows..must be rich people community. Of course there was a golf couse nearby.. so I watched people tee-off at some of the holes.
